wow it’s been a hot minute since i posted a review up on here – sorry about that! i have a lot of reviews lined up, but lockdown life during COVID-19 has thrown me all out of whack and i’ve been focusing on just getting through my day to day (and my island on animal crossing…). anyway, today i’m bringing you a review of the gorgeous black magic set* from scantilly.

the look

in true scantilly style*, black magic is a striking design with strappy detail, sheer mesh and fishnet overlays with a plunging cup. it is definitely a made-to-be-seen style, and the straps look great peeking out under a lower neckline – instantly adding some interest to an otherwise simple outfit. the sheer mesh cups are overlaid with two fishnet straps to each cup, which criss-cross across your collarbones and neck to join the band at the back like normal shoulder straps. it’s like an updated version of the brand’s well-loved voodoo bra from a few seasons ago.

the set comes with a matching high waist brief* which isn’t my favourite style, but i feel like it works really well with the overall look and aesthetic of the set. the brief is also made from sheer mesh, with fishnet strips crossing over your waist and fastening with a swan hook at the back. both the bra and brief are complemented with the signature rose gold scantilly hardware.

the fit

my standard sizing is 28G (27″ underbust) bra and an 8-10 brief, and i took the black magic set* in a 30G for the bra and a small for the brief. the 30G bra fits well – the band was pretty firm to begin with and was comfortable on the middle hooks, but has given in quite easily after a couple of wears and is now comfortable on the tightest set of hooks (remember – a new bra should ideally start on the loosest set of hooks to get the most life out of it! if this were available in 28 backs, i would’ve still gone for that). if you like a firm band, then stick to your normal back size. if you’re between sizes or prefer a looser fit, then it may be best to pop yourself up a back size.

the main cup is made from a single piece of mesh with two darts for shaping, and is a little closed on top with a plunge gore. i normally wear a 30FF in scantilly but opted for a 30G in black magic as the mesh doesn’t have much stretch to it and the 30FF dug in just a fraction along the neckline due to my full, rounded breast shape. if you’re less full on top, your regular cup size should be perfect! with the bigger cup size i have the flexibility of being able to wear this when i’m on my period, too. the 30G is a tiny bit loose when i’m not on my period, but the fishnet overlay masks this pretty well.

speaking of the fishnet straps, they are all fixed to the back band with fully adjustable straps so you have full control over the fit of them – which is a great touch as we’re all different! the fishnet strips themselves don’t have any support in them, but the softness and stretch means they can be manipulated across your bust to fit where and how you like.

the black magic brief* offers a comfortable fit, with the main mesh part sitting at just below the navel in more of a mid-rise than a high waist, and a slightly higher leg cut. the size small fits me great as a UK 8-10. it has a brazilian brief back which is my favourite shape of knicker, with folded edges for a smooth and comfortable fit without digging in. the fishnet strips on the brief join at the front leg edge and cross over at the front, and like the bra they’re soft and stretchy so you have a little freedom of where you want them to sit.

the verdict

i’m always a total sucker for a scantilly set* and i just love that they’re constantly bringing out these iconic designs specifically for DD+ cups. black magic offers some amazing underwear-as-outerwear styling possibilities, and works so well alongside the rest of the scantilly range*. when i wear this set it makes me feel all kinds of fierce and sexy, like i can take on the world. i would’ve loved an additional thong or lower rise brief coordinate to choose from – i just don’t personally find high waist briefs to be very comfortable to wear – but regardless of my personal preferences, this set is supportive and so empowering and i know plenty of folk out there who prefer a fuller coverage brief. the set feels really well made and i’m sure it will hold up to regular wear and washing, and i can’t wait for lockdown to be over so i can slay it all day with my outerwear!

black magic* might seem quite daunting to put on, but i promise you it isn’t as hard as it looks. just take a look at this little video we created if you’re not convinced:

so stay home, stay safe, and slay your isolation style with sassy underwear! black magic* is now in clearance, priced at £29 (was £44) for the bra and £14 (was £20) for the brief – coming in at under £50 for the set which is bargain! fancy something different to black? it’s also available in red*!
